Maroon 5's "It Was Always You" - Song Review

Pop-rock group Maroon 5, fronted by the gorgeously stunning Adam Levine, have played an important part in my music intake. Their debut album, Songs About Jane, must be one of the best records of all time, and they have consistently put out enjoyable tunes. The band's last effort, Overexposed, may have been a bit too pop for most fans, but songs like "One More Night" and "Love Somebody" made it easier to swallow.

For their upcoming fifth studio album, cleverly titled V, the band has already returned to the top regions of the charts with top-ten hit "Maps", but showcase a more impressive blend of their previous sounds with the darker, moodier promotional single, "It Was Always You", a ballad which contains electronic, pop and rock influences.

"It Was Always You" immediately highlights the always glowing vocals of Levine, at times sounding like a 2014 reincarnation of Phil Collins, as he sings of staring into hazel eyes after waking up for a dream. Presumed to be written about his relationship with now-model wife, the track, which hopefully becomes an official single in the future, is an adorable love song with continues to broaden the band's range and inspirations. It's a coming together of their two sides.

"It was always you, now I know why my heart wasn't satisfied," Levine sings on the poppy chorus as he stretches his vocals to reach impressive notes that truly carry the new track. It may not have the same hard edge of their early work, but it's nice to see the band maintaining a mainstream sounds and working it in new and intriguing ways. A sweet message, sultry vocals and a catchy beat, what more can you ask for from a Grammy award-winning group?
