G.R.L.'s "Lighthouse" - Single Review

The circumstances surrounding the appreciated return of girl supergroup G.R.L. are pretty somber and grim, but the lovely ladies are definitely trying to make the most of the unfortunate situation. Just as the girls were riding high on the positive critical reception of their infectious single "Ugly Heart", horrible news of former member Simone Battle's untimely death shook the group, and they were forced to take a break.

Fast forward four months and G.R.L. have returned (as a four-piece act) to the spotlight with the release of "Lighthouse", a touching tribute to Battle's life and the preventable problems she endured leading up to her passing. The guitar-driven pop ballad seems to written directly for Battle, or for anyone else facing a difficult challenge, as the girls sing that they are right by her side if she should ever need them. It's touching, a strong effort and one that could definitely put the girl group on the map.

Listeners will immediately gravitate towards the song's real message and the tight bond between the members of the group. "When you feel lost, then I'll reach out, to guide you home with my lighthouse," the talented group sings on the soaring, emotional chorus. The song thankfully puts all the attention of the girls' stunning vocal performances as the Dr. Luke-assisted production only adds depth to the new release.

Along with the single release, G.R.L. have also unveiled a lovely supporting visual for "Lighthouse". As the girls are shown belting the lyrics to the song in a dark room with only lightbulbs hanging around them, videos and images of Battle are shown throughout. It's a simple concept, one Battle would probably approve of, as it highlights the sense of loss and recovery.

"Lighthouse" is a beautiful song. Let's hope the world will resonate with its message, as I'm sure the girls of G.R.L. do.
